Fleece Feast! Shearing will begin in March, and we are happily anticipating the new crop of wool. There will be white and natural-colored fleece from various flocks including the "Lopez Specials", Romney, Coopworth, Blueface Leicester, Friesian, and Rambouillet. We will post a list of our favorite fleece as soon as they are available. Unprocessed fleece will range in price from $10 to $16 per pound. Call or email us for prices and samples of a particular fleece. Workshops and Events Lopez Lamb, Wool and Goat Festival 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. - events free of charge Back by popular demand, this year's festival will expand to include dairy and fiber goats. The day's free outdoor events will include sheep-shearing and sheep dog demonstrations, and various breeds of sheep and goats to see and interact with. Inside the Center there will be a sheep-to-shawl demonstration, felting and dyeing demonstrations, information displays from island agricultural groups, and vendors selling island-grown and made lamb and wool-related products. Popular Orcas Island chef Christina Orchid will present the evening's ticketed dinner, featuring Lopez lamb and fresh organic produce. All proceeds from the dinner and auction will again go to the Lopez Farm-to-School Program. Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat A fantastic event for knitters, spinners, weavers and fiber enthusiasts of all persuasions. Classes and workshops, a place to spin and knit and be inspired by an enthusiastic community. The exceptionally varied and well-stocked marketplace is open to the public free of charge. Look for Island Fibers in our new location in the Market - we have doubled our space, and it will be filled with fleece, yarn, and lots more treasures and surprises. Orcas Spinning Retreat with Judith MacKenzie Whidbey Spin-In A two day event spondored by the Whidbey Weavers' Guild for over 30 years. Sheep shearing on Lopez Island will be well underway, and this is the best place of get first pick of Lopez Islands' fleece feast for 2012.
